Our Garden Beds are Finished
There was another work party to finish the filling and labeling of the new raised beds on Saturday April 7th. I was unable to attend due to Easter dinner prep but all who were there did a marvelous job. The beds look Spiffy!!! I especially love the labels!
Many thanks to all who came and helped. We will soon be able to plant!

March 2012 Our Raised Beds
Saturday March 24 We had a work party to finish installing the raised beds . Phil McAloon and his brother Andy made all the beds from donated lumber. They look really beautiful and are 10 feet long by 4 feet wide. A host of volunteer young people came out to help fill the beds with the topsoil and compost. It was a lot of hard work but we got almost all the beds filled. Next Saturday we will have another work party to install our deer fence! It's very exciting seeing our garden take shape. Many thanks to Hank Ward for all his hard work and everyone on the committee!

Progress of our Garden
As of Monday May 2nd this is how our garden area looks. The sod has been removed and the soil is smoothed out. A big thanks to whoever did all this work! We are waiting to hear about the installation of a fence to protect the garden from deer and other wildlife. Hopefully we will hear soon how that will be accomplished! I can't wait to get planting! My tomatoes are growing out of their peat cups and I want to start my gourds. What is everyone else planning on growing?

A Garden Consultation
While walking in the Park this morning I noticed Andy Dell's truck pull up to the site we have plotted out for our garden. He was consulting with our Public Works men about tilling up the area and what needs to be done. It was exciting to see some activity there. We are all hoping the garden gets tilled soon so we can get planting!

Heirlooms vs Hybrid Tomatoes
There is a lot of discussion and disagreement among gardeners lately about what makes a great tomato. Those who like to grow Heirlooms are in one camp while the Hybrid lovers are in another. The New York Times published a good article about this question recently. You can read it here.

My mother always grew Celebrity (hybrid) and found it to be a great choice. I have to admit I agree with her and have started several in my little farm of baby tomatoes. However I am also growing Amish Paste and Golden Jubilee which are Heirlooms. I want to see how these varieties perform this year in the new garden now that I will finally have room to experiment with several types! The seedlings have just started to get their second set of leaves this week and I am already dreaming of the great taste of a homegrown tomato on my favorite sandwich of all time a BLT!

Spring Has Sprung
Our Community Garden is in it's early stages and consists of 4 wooden posts right behind the Phase I Pavilion at the Falls Township Community Park. We are hoping to transform this into a thriving Community garden where we can commune with nature and each other while growing lots of wonderful fresh garden produce. It doesn't look like much now but stay tuned!
